Summary:
The organization is seeking a Paralegal Aide to assist the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) Legal Department with various administrative tasks and substantive assignments. The OCME is responsible for investigating cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, accidents, or other suspicious or unusual circumstances. The Paralegal Aide will report to the General Counsel and other attorneys within the Legal Department and will be responsible for tasks such as reviewing requests for records, conducting legal research, and assisting with communication with outside attorneys and agencies. The ideal candidate will have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience in paralegal services, with at least one additional year of pertinent paralegal experience or a baccalaureate degree in addition to the minimum requirements. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $48, - $68,. New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.

Job Description:
The Paralegal Aide will work under the direction of the General Counsel and other attorneys within the OCME Legal Department to assist with various administrative tasks and substantive assignments. This is a full-time position that may require an exam. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
- Reviewing requests for records, photographs, and expert review of tissue specimens
- Coordinating communication with local District Attorney Offices for cases under their jurisdiction
- Resolving intra-agency issues and providing guidance to other departments
- Communicating with the public and outside attorneys seeking information, guidance, and records
- Conducting legal research and analysis of local, state, and federal legislation and case law
- Drafting correspondence, subpoenas, and letters of reply
- Notifying analysts in the DNA Laboratory of Court Orders
- Communicating with next-of-kin on administrative matters
- Preparing Agency responses to Freedom of Information Law requests
- Updating information in the NYC Open Data Portal
- Liaising with the New York City Conflict of Interests Board
- Assisting with Agency Counsel travel memos
- Reviewing and managing inquiries related to research and surveillance activities
- Assisting attorneys with litigation matters and other projects
- Processing mail received by the Legal Department
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 1 year of full-time experience in paralegal (legal assistant) services, or 2 years with an associate degree or 60 semester credits, or 4 years with a high school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in the American Legal System
- Paralegal Certification obtained in the United States or undergraduate credits can be substituted for experience
- Additional year of pertinent paralegal experience or baccalaureate degree required for Assignment Level II duties and pay
- 55a Program eligible for qualified individuals with a disability
- Residency requirement within 90 days of appointment
