Job Title: Deputy Attorney General - Employment Law Section
Job Responsibilities:
- Handle complex civil employment cases, which include tasks such as drafting and arguing motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting depositions, and preparing for trial.
- Serve as first or second chair in jury and bench trials.
- Conduct contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board.
- Defend agency administrative actions against petitions for writ of mandamus.
- Draft appellate briefs and argue before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
- Obtain work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
- Provide detailed case analyses and recommendations to clients.
- Offer training, guidance, and advice to state agencies on various employment and personnel matters.
- Communicate effectively with judges, court staff, juries, and witnesses.
- Work cooperatively with colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be active members in good standing of the California State Bar and reside in California.
- For the Deputy Attorney General Range A, candidates are required to have 0-24 months of legal experience, and for Range B, 2-5 years of experience is necessary.
- Experience in civil litigation as a law clerk or extern, and employment litigation experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
Salary Information:
- The salary for the Deputy Attorney General position ranges from $7, to $11, per month.
- New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
- The Deputy Attorney General classifications qualify for a "Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary, with starting salaries of $8,588 for Range A and $9,666 for Range B.
Additional Information:
- The position offers a hybrid telework option, allowing deputies to choose between teleworking or working in the office, with some in-office attendance required for specific operational needs.
- ELS deputies are expected to manage their work-related calendars with multiple deadlines and be available for meetings and communication during regular business hours.
- Deputies may need to travel for witness interviews and attend lengthy trials and hearings in other counties, which could require overnight stays.
