Job Summary:
The paralegal for the Family Defense Project at a reputed firm will provide essential support to attorneys in all facets of case management and client processing. This role requires a deep commitment to public interest law, with a focus on serving low-income populations and individuals with disabilities. The paralegal will handle a wide range of responsibilities, including some secretarial tasks, to support case management and the assigned attorney(s).

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct extensive client interviews and provide consistent follow-up to ensure client needs are met.
- Facilitate client referrals and ensure all client documentation and files are complete and accurate.
- Under the supervision of attorneys, advise clients on legal procedures and assist in preparing legal documents such as pre-hearing memos and briefs.
- Draft correspondence to clients, maintaining clear and professional communication.
- Investigate and verify relevant facts, conducting legal research as necessary to support case work.
- Index and organize documents meticulously in preparation for hearings.
- Manage new client intakes and ensure they are entered into the case management system as required.
- Enter pre-screens for referrals and track intakes and referrals using SharePoint.
- Monitor and track case developments and important deadlines to ensure timely progression of cases.
- Develop a thorough understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and community referral resources through participation in various training opportunities, including CLE, substantive law meetings, and other educational events.
- Adhere to professional and ethical standards of practice at all times.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to multitask effectively while maintaining strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in written, verbal, and listening skills.
- Strong time management and organizational capabilities.
- Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently and delegate them when necessary.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, case management systems, electronic research, and related software.
- Possession of a current driver’s license and/or the ability to travel to required locations such as courts and hearing offices.

Education and Experience:
- A Paralegal Certificate, Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies, or equivalent relevant experience is required.
- At least one year of prior paralegal work or relevant experience is preferred.
- Experience in managing confidential information and communication is essential.

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer are required.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
