Job Title: Deputy Attorney General - Employment Law Section
Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy Attorney General in the Employment Law Section is responsible for handling complex civil employment cases involving the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Title VII, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, California Family Rights Act, and the whistleblower protection act. Key responsibilities include:
- Drafting and arguing motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting depositions and other discovery, preparing and arguing summary judgment motions, conducting expert discovery, and preparing for trial.
- First- and second-chairing jury and bench trials.
- Handling contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board.
- Defending agency administrative actions against petitions for writ of mandamus.
- Drafting appellate briefs and arguing before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
- Obtaining work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
- Communicating with clients, providing detailed case analyses and recommendations.
- Providing training, guidance, and advice to state agencies on various employment and personnel matters.
- Communicating with judges, court staff, juries, and witnesses.
- Working cooperatively, professionally, and effectively with colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must be active members in good standing of the California State Bar and reside in California. The position is suitable for attorneys with 0-5 years of experience who are keen to develop their litigation and trial skills. The job classification allows for a "Hire Above Minimum" salary, with starting salaries as follows:
- Deputy Attorney General Range A (0-24 months): $8,588
- Deputy Attorney General Range B (2-5 years): $9,666
Candidates should have excellent legal research skills, the ability to interview witnesses, effective written advocacy skills, and the ability to navigate litigation and document management software. Experience in civil litigation, particularly employment litigation, is advantageous but not mandatory.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Deputy Attorney General position is $7, - $11, per month. New candidates to the state will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable. The position is full-time, permanent, and offers a hybrid telework option, with some in-office attendance required for meetings, court appearances, or other operational reasons.

- The position is housed within the Division of Civil Law, Employment Law Section, and may be filled in various cities across the state.
- A LiveScan check is required for the position.
- The Deputy Attorney General will work under the supervision of a Supervising Deputy Attorney General and the Senior Assistant Attorney General.
- The role may require managing a work-related calendar with multiple deadlines and appearances in varied venues, working long hours and weekends when necessary, and traveling for witness interviews or lengthy trials and hearings in other counties.
