Job Title: Associate General Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Associate General Counsel is responsible for supporting the organization’s mission and addressing legal matters in both settled and evolving areas of law. Under the direction of the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, this role involves providing advice on a wide range of legal issues, including public meetings, policy and regulatory review, administrative hearings, litigation, public records, licensing and enforcement, contracts and procurements, finance, and labor and employment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing legal counsel to the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Executive Director, organization, its Commissioners, and other staff members.
- Developing expertise in laws governing adult- or medical-use marijuana and identifying emerging issues.
- Monitoring applicable state and federal laws, decisional law from other jurisdictions, and industry publications.
- Offering clear, concise, and correct written and oral advice while evaluating the applicability of settled areas of the law to emerging and unsettled areas.
- Advising staff on constituent and press inquiries and supporting the organization in specific subject matter areas.
- Ensuring compliance with Open Meetings and Public Records Laws, administrative hearing processes, and coordination with the Office of the Attorney General on litigation matters.
- Handling procurement and contract processes, including drafting and reviewing contracts and associated legal documents.
- Maintaining high standards of personal, professional, and ethical conduct.
- Communicating the organization’s policies and procedures to staff and the public.
- Anticipating and addressing legal issues related to the organization’s evolving mission.
- Drafting legal memoranda and advising on labor and employment issues.
- Performing routine administrative and clerical duties as needed.
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the Massachusetts bar.
- Two to three years of legal experience, preferably in a public-sector or compliance environment.
- Experience or familiarity with state agencies, including boards and commissions.
- Familiarity or experience with laws governing adult- or medical-use marijuana or a commitment to developing expertise in this area.
- Familiarity or experience with civil or criminal litigation, managing caseloads, and prosecuting cases.
- Experience or expertise in administrative law, licensing, investigations, and conducting informal and formal adjudicatory hearings.
- Familiarity or experience with contracts and procurement.
- Strong experience using MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and willingness to learn state- and organization-specific electronic systems.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the position of Associate General Counsel is $90,000 to $105,000 per year.
