Job Title: AVP, Legal, Artificial Intelligence Counsel

Job Responsibilities:
The AVP, Legal, Artificial Intelligence Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice regarding the development, implementation, and monitoring of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and platforms. The role involves offering guidance on AI governance, compliance best practices, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements in industries such as life insurance, annuities, retail funds, retirement solutions, and group benefits. Key responsibilities include:
- Staying informed on current and emerging trends related to AI and assessing their impact on the company’s strategies.
- Leading organizational initiatives to support change management and departmental or enterprise initiatives.
- Identifying and directing strategic process improvements to enhance quality across teams, departments, and business units.
- Providing strategic direction to build and enhance capabilities within the assigned area of responsibility.
- Offering subject matter expertise on complex assignments and projects.
- Analyzing and providing strategic legal advice on changes and developments in laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance at various governmental levels concerning AI systems.
- Acting as a subject matter expert for AI-related legal matters.
- Identifying and communicating legal exposure and risk proactively.
- Contributing to AI-related policies, practices, and guidelines that promote fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethical considerations.
- Engaging with industry groups and committees to track changes in AI-related laws and best practices.
- Reviewing and drafting language for contracts and other legal documents related to AI.
- Collaborating with IT, Compliance, Risk, and business teams to ensure AI systems adhere to relevant regulations and standards.
- Managing and directing outside counsel as appropriate.

Education and Experience Information:
The position requires an undergraduate degree and a Juris Doctor (.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved school. The candidate must be a member of the Bar in good standing. The role requires a minimum of 7 years of experience as an attorney, preferably at a law firm or financial services company. Additionally, 1 to 3 years of experience in insurance, AI, or relevant technology-related legal fields is considered a plus.

Salary Information:
The pay range for this position is between $125,800 and $229,100. The anticipated pay for new hires is expected to fall between the minimum and midpoint of this range, although it could vary above or below the listed range based on factors such as work experience, education, location, licensure requirements, proficiency, and qualifications. This base pay is part of the company’s total rewards package, which may also include eligibility for the Annual Incentive Program. Other rewards may include long-term incentives, sales incentives, and a standard benefits package offered by the company.
