Advocate for Injured Employees (Ombudsman IV)
Job Responsibilities
The Advocate for Injured Employees, also known as an ombudsman, is responsible for assisting and educating injured employees of Texas throughout the dispute resolution process related to workers' compensation claims. The role involves:
- Assisting injured employees one-on-one during mediation and/or formal hearings and providing routine updates about the status of their claims.
- Educating injured employees about the workers' compensation dispute process and the relevant laws and rules.
- Assisting with referrals to social services through other state agencies.
- Providing assistance in filing claims and obtaining supporting documentation from doctors.
- Contacting insurance carriers and medical providers to identify and resolve disputes.
- Documenting customer interactions in a computer system.
- Answering general customer service questions.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
The role operates under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Education and Experience Information
This position requires:

- Three years of full-time experience in fields such as claims management, insurance, casework, law office (paralegal/legal assistant), healthcare, social work, or workers’ compensation.
A current law license must be surrendered upon hire.
Education and experience relevant to the position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Preferences for this position include:
- Experience with medical terminology, rehabilitation, and disabilities/impairments.
- Public speaking abilities, including training, outreach, and community speaking.
- Bilingual English and Spanish language skills, both oral and written.
The position requires demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook, as well as skills in:
- Conflict resolution.
- Assisting the public and handling problems.
- Interpreting and explaining laws and regulations.
- Data entry and retrieval.
- Use of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
The position also requires the ability to:
- Travel.
- Multitask between different cases and meet deadlines.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with various individuals and groups.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and the public.
Salary Information
The salary for this position is set at a monthly rate of $5,. The position is classified as exempt from overtime.
