Job Title: Paralegal

Job Responsibilities:
The Kings County District Attorney’s Office (KCDA), one of the largest prosecutor’s offices in the country, is seeking a Paralegal for its Hate Crimes Bureau. The Bureau is dedicated to investigating and prosecuting crimes committed by law enforcement against civilians, as well as those motivated by race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability. Under general supervision, with the freedom to exercise independent judgment and initiative, the Paralegal will:

- Prepare misdemeanors and felonies for trial and grand jury presentations.
- Draft legal documents, including subpoenas, orders to produce, unsealing orders, material witness orders, and other necessary requests.
- Obtain essential case documents and footage such as NYPD paperwork, FDNY paperwork, body-worn camera footage, grand jury minutes, medical records, NYC Corrections paperwork, and other related materials.
- Contact civilian witnesses and notify police officers for grand jury presentations, trial preparation, and trial appearances.
- Ensure witnesses are produced in a timely manner through correspondence, notifications, telephone contacts, material witness orders, or field team requests to detective investigators.
- Act as a liaison with court staff and other community partners.
- Monitor discovery materials and work performed on all assigned cases.
- Assist and support Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) with investigations.
- Obtain information and documents through visits to court and other governmental agencies.
- Carefully redact discoverable paperwork, bodycam footage, and 911 calls.
- Provide backup coverage for other paralegal staff as needed.
- Provide administrative support for the bureau in various areas.
- Maintain case files, update files with criminal histories, and archive files according to records retention policies established by the office.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Paralegal position must meet the following criteria:

- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
- An associate degree and two to four years of full-time satisfactory work experience in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services; or
- A Paralegal Certification from a program approved by the American Bar Association.

Employees of the City of New York may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs. The federal government offers student loan forgiveness through its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) to all qualifying public service employees.
