Job Description:
The organization is seeking Claim Specialists Level 1 within the Tort Division. This role involves work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility under the supervision of supervisory legal assistant staff, attorneys, and/or higher-level staff. Key responsibilities include:
- Investigating and assisting in the preparation for trial of less serious claims for and against the City.
- Securing evidence by interviewing interested parties, witnesses, officers, and other involved persons.
- Assisting attorneys by preparing and processing subpoenas, motions, affidavits, legal notices, and other forms and papers related to legal proceedings and transactions.
- Obtaining, reviewing, updating, and maintaining physical and electronic case files.
- Obtaining, collecting, assembling, and reviewing records and data for attorneys.
- Performing legal research as well as database and site searches.
- Submitting, obtaining, and filing documents from various courts and/or City agencies throughout the City.
- Checking records and requesting adjournments to various courts.
- Preparing discovery materials for production.
- Performing routine administrative duties when necessary, including photocopying, filing, scanning, archiving, data entry, indexing, reserving conference rooms, and managing attorneys' calendars.
- Engaging in physical activities such as lifting and carrying boxes and files, climbing stairs, and traveling throughout the City on all types of public transportation, and/or walking in all kinds of weather, often carrying files.
Job Responsibilities:
- Investigate and prepare for trial of less serious claims.
- Secure evidence through interviews with involved parties.
- Assist in legal document preparation and processing.
- Maintain and update case files.
- Perform legal research and document filing.
- Handle administrative duties as required.
Education and Experience Information:
Minimum qualifications include:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss.
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of full-time satisfactory experience in investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss.
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the above requirements, with college education substituting for experience on the basis that 30 semester credits may be substituted for each year of required experience. All candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
Preferred Skills:
- Educational background in . Law, . Legal Studies, . Paralegal Studies, . Political Science, or experience in paralegal services involving the American legal system.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and computer skills, with proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word).
- Proficiency in LexisNexis, Lexis Advance, Adobe Acrobat, and court-related sites is advantageous.
- Ability to handle sensitive, confidential documents and work independently as well as part of a team.
Salary Information:
Salary range: $46, – $74,
Additional Information:
- This position is open to qualified persons with disabilities eligible for the 55-a Program.
- Potential eligibility for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
- Residency in New York City is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with certain exceptions for City Employees with two years of continuous service.
