Associate Director of Artificial Intelligence - Legal Innovation
Job Responsibilities
The Associate Director of Artificial Intelligence - Legal Innovation plays a crucial role within the law firm's Technology team. This position is primarily responsible for the development and implementation of the firm's AI strategy with a focus on legal product support, legal training, client offerings, and AI application management. Key responsibilities include:
- Integrating ethical considerations and responsible data governance principles into all AI-related projects. This involves coordinating with the Technology and Information Services Department, including cybersecurity and AI governance teams, to ensure secure handling and storage of sensitive data, complying with data protection regulations, and meeting client expectations.
- Managing the daily operations of the Innovation Attorneys and AI Application teams. This includes providing strategic direction, fostering professional development, cultivating a culture of innovation, and encouraging curiosity, experimentation, and learning within the team and across the firm.
- Collaborating with attorney stakeholders, leadership, and others within the Technology and Information Services Department. This involves designing, implementing, and presenting innovation-focused attorney trainings across the firm, such as at AI Academy.
- Driving AI engagement across legal practice groups by collecting and highlighting lawyer testimonials, effective use cases, and strategic opportunities at key case and deal milestones.
- Attending innovation-focused conferences to maintain a current understanding of the AI landscape from both legal and ethical perspectives. This knowledge is used to guide decision-making and engagement strategies.
- Identifying, evaluating, and advocating for innovative AI-based legal technology solutions that improve operational efficiency and client service.
- Collaborating with the technology department and data integration teams to design effective strategies for connecting systems and advising on data structures.
- Communicating effectively with firm leadership and key attorney stakeholders about progress, challenges, and outcomes related to the firm's AI and innovation initiatives.
- Staying informed of emerging trends in machine learning, natural language processing, large language models, and generative AI and legal tech, to maintain a future-focused perspective that enables the firm to stay ahead of industry developments.
- Protecting and maintaining any highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and/or proprietary information retained by the law firm.
Education and Experience Information
Candidates for this role should possess:
- Extensive knowledge of AI technology, data governance, and ethical considerations within a legal environment.
- A technical background in data analysis, machine learning, natural language processing, and other AI-based technologies.
- Knowledge of data visualization and dashboarding tools.
In terms of educational and experience requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field, with a preference for a . from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Additional management experience and/or qualifications in business administration or a related field are preferred.
- A minimum of six years of experience in a professional services law firm or corporate legal department, with at least three years in a leadership role related to technology innovation and AI.
- A minimum of three years of experience managing a team of professionals, preferably in the technology space.
- Demonstrated experience in managing cross-functional teams and projects.
- A minimum of two years of relevant law firm experience as an innovation and/or practicing attorney is preferred.
Salary Information
The pay range for this position is between USD $280, and USD $320, per year.
