Founded in 1986 by four attorneys determined to think outside the box, the firm has grown to its present size without merging or absorbing a single group. The firm attributes much of its growth to recruiting at top law schools, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Michigan, Columbia and other distinguished schools.
The firm's cases include nearly every type of business dispute, from patent and copyright litigation to securities litigation, international arbitration to antitrust litigation, class action litigation and employment litigation to white collar crime. Over 50% of the firm's practice is intellectual property litigation. Quinn Emanuel represents Fortune 500 companies and other enterprises in a broad spectrum of business disputes spanning many industries, including high technology, entertainment, media, aerospace, defense, banking, computer, software, real estate, construction, securities, and insurance.
The firm is well known for attracting, and retaining some of the most talented individuals in the field. These include one of the firm's partners, who is the only lawyer this decade to appear three times in the last six years on The National Law Journal's annual list of the 10 Top Trial Lawyers in the U.S. Another partner has won over $2 billion in verdicts in his career. Another was the former Dean of the Stanford Law School, who is on anyone's list of the top appellate advocates in the country. Another partner is recognized in arbitration circles internationally as both an advocate and arbitrator and is on the Executive Committee of the AAA, a Regional Director of the ICC and the co-editor of the leading treatise on international arbitration. Still another was selected recently as one of the top lawyers in the U.S. under the age of 45 by The American Lawyer.
Additionally, the firm has regularly been recognized as being the ''best of the best'' and on everyone's ''top'' lists in most all of the major legal publications around the country including The American Lawyer, The National Law Journal, The Los Angeles Daily Journal, Chambers USA, and California Law Business.
The firm values diversity, and in 2010, the Business Insider ranked Quinn Emanuel as the 11th most diverse law firm with respect to GLBT attorneys. In the same year, the American Lawyer ranked Quinn Emanuel 22nd in its annual diversity survey among the AmLaw 200 firms. The National Law Journal ranked the firm as the 6th most diverse law firm in California and the 17th most diverse in the nation. California Lawyer ranked the firm as the 5th most diverse firm in California.
As of August 2010, the firm's partners have tried 615 jury cases to verdict, winning 548 or 89.1%. They have also won 404 out of 429 bench trials, and 251 out of 273 arbitrations. The combined record for all trials and arbitrations is 1203 wins out of 1317 or 91.3%. When representing plaintiffs, the firm's lawyers have won over $15 billion in judgments and settlements.
Quinn Emanuel is the only firm in the United States that has won four nine-figure jury verdicts in the last seven years.
