Job Title: Advocate for Injured Employees (Ombudsman IV)

Job Responsibilities:
The Advocate for Injured Employees, also known as an ombudsman, plays a crucial role in assisting and educating injured employees in Texas regarding their workers' compensation claims. The primary responsibilities of this position include:

- Assisting injured employees one-on-one throughout the dispute resolution process, ensuring their understanding and involvement.
- Answering questions and providing guidance to injured employees regarding their claims for medical and income benefits.
- Reviewing case backgrounds and claims thoroughly, gathering and evaluating information such as medical records and doctors' letters.
- Reporting and referring any complaints that arise during the process.
- Tracking and providing updates on claim status to the injured employees.
- Assisting and preparing injured employees for mediations and formal hearings, and providing routine updates about the status of their claims.
- Educating injured employees about the workers’ compensation dispute process and relevant laws and rules.
- Assisting with referrals to social services from other state agencies.
- Providing assistance in filing claims and obtaining supporting documentation from medical professionals.
- Contacting insurance carriers and medical providers to identify and resolve disputes.
- Documenting customer interactions and contacts in a computer system.
- Answering general customer service inquiries.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the organization.

Education and Experience Information:
The position requires the following qualifications:

- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
- A minimum of three years of full-time experience in fields such as claims management, insurance, casework, law office (paralegal/legal assistant), healthcare, social work, or workers’ compensation.
- If the candidate holds a current law license, it must be surrendered upon hire.

The organization allows for the substitution of education and experience on a year-for-year basis if relevant to the position requirements.

Preferences for this position include:
- Experience with medical terminology, rehabilitation, and understanding disabilities/impairments.
- Skills in public speaking, including training, outreach, and community speaking.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish, both oral and written.

The position requires demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook, as well as skills in conflict resolution, public assistance, problem-solving, interpreting and explaining laws and regulations, data entry and retrieval, and proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Additionally, the position requires the ability to travel, multitask between different cases while meeting deadlines, establish and maintain effective working relationships with various individuals and groups, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and the public.

Salary Information:
The position offers a monthly salary of $5,, with a state job code of 3665 and a salary administration plan of B, grade 23. The position is exempt from overtime status.
