Job Title: Associate Counsel/Senior Counsel

Job Responsibilities:

1. Advise internal clients on student affairs matters.
2. Provide legal counsel on student conduct and compliance with federal and state regulations, including FERPA, Title IV of the Higher Education Act, Title VI and IX of the Civil Rights Act, and the Clery Act.
3. Address issues related to speech, expression, harassment, discrimination, and disability accommodation.
4. Engage in policy development and revision for higher education law.
5. Offer general legal advice on a wide range of issues including research misconduct, international affairs, academic and affiliation agreements, and responding to subpoenas and investigations.
6. Collaborate with various campus departments such as Community Standards, the Office of Global Affairs, and the Office for Research and Innovation.
7. Represent the university in agency proceedings and interact with investigators, opposing counsel, and other external parties.
8. Manage complex and high-level legal matters with autonomy, including litigation and investigations, and advise senior administrators.

Education and Experience Information:

Associate Counsel:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited ABA law school (or foreign equivalent).
- Admission to the New York State Bar in good standing (or eligibility for admission within six months).
- Two years of full-time experience advising on student affairs-related legal matters.
- Preferred experience includes working in higher education and/or government law and advising on multifaceted and complex legal issues.

Senior Counsel:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited ABA law school (or foreign equivalent).
- Admission to the New York State Bar in good standing (or eligibility for admission within six months).
- Five years of full-time experience advising on student affairs-related legal matters.
- Experience in independent complex case management.
- Preferred experience includes working in higher education and/or government law and advising on multifaceted and complex legal issues.
