I do not have any advice to the firm management. As I have indicated, I believe Hinshaw is a well-managed law firm.
Hinshaw & Culbertson is a well-managed firm. The working environment is professional. Associates receive yearly performance reviews and also are eligible to receive bonuses based on their amount of billable hours. I worked there as an associate for approximately 5 years and found it to be a generally very good working environment.
In my opinion, like many or most large law firms, Hinshaw seems to reward attorneys who bring in clients/work (rainmakers), much more than it values the attorneys who work for the clients and whose excellent work is required to keep the clients satisfied.
In my five years of employment at Hinshaw, I did not encounter any current partner who I would avoid. I encountered only one partner who is no longer employed there that I would strongly advise people to avoid.
Hinshaw will treat you fairly. Hinshaw will compensate you fairly. If you have questions or concerns Hinshaw's human resources and/or management will attempt to address any issues.

Listen to and act upon peoples' complaints. Many people often got frustrated that two different people who put in vastly different amounts of effort often received the same outcomes. This just causes more turnover and instability.
They valued work-life balance and offered pleasant minor benefits around the office - major benefits like health insurance, etc. were also somewhat above average.
Management seemed out of touch - people often got away with not pulling their weight. It seemed your complaints were often ignored, or that you were not treated as an individual. Pay was not great, and, as a result, loafing or frustration were fairly common, and turnover could be high.
At Hinshaw, we value long-term client relationships. That's why we make it a priority to help contribute to our client's success, whether that means solving a problem or helping to achieve their goal. We like to think that we are more than just our clients' "lawyers." We feel we are on the same journey with our clients — to grow their business into a sustainable institution. Sometimes this requires next generation solutions; in other words, a little creativity applied to legal issues or problems. Other times, it requires just purely practical thinking. We do both. Whatever the matter, our advice and counsel are tailored to our clients, which can only come from a strong partnership and deep understanding of their business and objectives.
Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. practices law in the following areas and works with its clients to provide the best possible legal solutions.
Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.
Associate hiring decisions are driven by the needs of the firm's practice groups. Candidates are selected and interviewed by the practice group's members and a member of the firm's Associate Interviewing Committee (AIC). The firm uses a "behavioral interview" format which seeks to identify candidates whose character traits correlate with associates who typically succeed at the firm and are promoted to partnership. Before an offer can be extended, the practice group leader and department leader must concur in the hiring decision and obtain the approval of the firm's three-member Associate Hiring Committee.
Hinshaw & Culbertson does not report any information regarding its pro bono activities.

The Law Firm Diversity Profile contains the firm's self-reported responses to the Vault/MCCA Law Firm Diversity Survey, an annual survey conducted by Vault.com in partnership with the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. Detailed demographic breakdowns of the firm's attorneys by level, race, gender, LGBT and disability status offer a valuable statistical overview, while descriptions of its diversity programs, initiatives and strategic plans provide a comprehensive portrait of the firm's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Our ten-week summer program is designed to provide law students with a complete and realistic view of our practice areas, as well as the culture of our firm. Summer associates work within the practice groups comprising the six departments of the firm-Defense Litigation, Business Transactions I and II, Business Litigation, Specialty Litigation & Insurance Coverage, and Lawyers for Professionals. This allows the summer associates to fully understand the breadth of the firm's expertise, the opportunities available at the firm and our expectations of new associates. Although the firm views the summer program as a working experience, it is our goal to make a summer position with the firm both intellectually and personally rewarding.
