Advice to law firm management:
As this firm is revenue oriented so you will get a mix of good projects as well as bad projects. You must be well-versed with the latest technologies to survive at this firm.

Pros:
The work-life balance at this firm is brilliant and work environment is very friendly. The workplace possesses a steep learning curve. The place is excellent for starting a new career and learning new things. The workplace is very organized and communication friendly.

Cons:
To be able to survive at this place one needs to be very much dynamic and adaptive to new technologies. The compensation is at par with other law firms in the market, but is not higher than others.

Improve technology. Take a less rigid approach. Keep up the good work.

Pros:
The culture is great at this firm. The atmosphere is relaxed and staff are great. They provide excellent training and top notch attorneys.

Cons:
Hours are long at times. Be prepared to work under pressure. There is not always a good balance between work and life.

The firm looks for students whose personal qualities, academic records and other achievements demonstrate exceptional ability, motivation, commercial skills and potential for growth.

Most summer associate hiring is done during August and September. For those students who are invited to the firm's offices for interviews, the Hiring Committee generally makes decisions within 10 days, based on the interviewers' written evaluations, academic and non-academic records, and the firm's overall hiring needs.

Pro bono

The firm's lawyers have been committed to public service ever since the firm was founded in 1931. A strong commitment is a longstanding tradition that is ingrained in the firm's culture. It defines who they are. It is an ethical obligation that the firm is happy to fulfill.

The firm handles many pro bono matters each year and is consistently ranked among the top firms for pro bono work. Debevoise is a charter signatory to the Pro Bono Institute's Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, committing to entrust 5 percent of its billed time to pro bono issues.

Debevoise sources it pro bono work from many areas, prime amongst them being legal service organizations, with whom it has a longstanding associations, such as the Legal Aid Society, Human Rights First and other similar organizations. Some pro bono projects are suggested by the lawyers themselves.

Summer associate program

The firm's summer program combines substantial work experience with opportunities to gain broad exposure to the firm. The program is open to those who have completed at least two years of law school and is structured to provide associates with the flexibility to explore as many practice areas as they wish and as time permits. Debevoise endeavors to match work assignments to the associate's stated interests. The firm recognizes these may change during the course of the summer. Not only does the firm accommodate these evolving interests, it encourages the associates to pursue them.

The firm does not want its associates to be enchained in schedules and have, therefore, chosen not to impose an assignment system that "rotates" associates through different areas of the firm; as a result, the summer associate experience can be as broad or as focused in the associate's chosen direction. Some of the associates spend time in the firm's international offices. Debevoise also provides opportunities for placements with public interest organizations to enhance legal experiences and training opportunities.

Each year the firm devotes considerable effort to selecting summer program participants who it believes will be strong additions to the firm after graduation. Historically, because of the high quality of its summer associates, a very high percentage of them have received offers for associate positions. Most return to the firm and build on their experience as summer associates.
