Always Ask and Observe: “How Long Have People Been Around?”
make the bonus system more transparent, set up better training programs if you continue to want to take in new attorneys, give the associates more say-so in how the firm is run
Big deal fortune 500 clients, experienced attorneys, friendly co workers, nice office, great location in downtown Chicago, early substantive experience because of the smaller size
Very hard to get training as a younger attorney, partners can be very demanding, bonus system is black box and hard to determine why a bonus was or wasn't given, associates aren't given much input
No specific partners to avoid, as it depends very much on department. The "partnership" as a whole can be intimidating as an associate, as the firm is somewhat hierarhicial
The staff is all quite friendly, the experience is super for a firm of this size, and the work is often very interesting (entertainment clients). Social events are often quite fun as well.
Remove the black box from bonuses, have a better system for training greener associates, have more iterative check-ins beyond mid-year and bonus-review
Getting to work with Fortune 500 companies in a smaller firm, friendly fellow lawyers and staff, free coffee, breakfast every Wednesday
Associates have no knowledge of how bonuses and promotions work, no real sense of camaraderie with co-workers outside of work
Neal Gerber Eisenberg is a Chicago-based law firm whose attorneys share a culture of teamwork and devotion to personalized client service to advance our clients’ business interests. Our attorneys provide legal business solutions to public and private entities of all types—including Fortune 100 companies, financial institutions, nonprofits and high net worth individuals—in connection with domestic and global business transactions and litigation. Our greatest asset is our people. Lawyers and staff at every level aspire to cultivate long-lasting relationships among one another and with each client. This mindset helps to advance our shared mission to be the best providers of legal services. To every matter, we bring a client-focused approach. First, we listen to our clients and learn about their challenges. We then deploy our collective legal aptitude, experience and industry knowledge to provide sound and cost-effective legal counsel.
We have assembled a “best of the best” roster of attorneys, and we are proud to be recognized nationally and internationally for our knowledge in a variety of practice areas. For 2015, Chambers USA ranked 10 of our practice groups and 22 individual attorneys.
The firm’s culture of teamwork, focus on client needs and practical solutions, and willingness to adapt quickly to meet marketplace demands are key factors behind our success. In addition to making a positive difference for our clients, our lawyers strive to do the same for their communities.
