Job Responsibilities:
A staff attorney in the Housing, Consumer, and Public Benefits Division is tasked with a variety of responsibilities essential to providing legal aid to low-income individuals. Key duties include gathering evidence, advising clients on their legal rights, drafting legal documents, and conducting civil lawsuits. The attorney must conduct interviews with clients and witnesses with cultural competence and represent clients in court as well as before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of the government. Additionally, the attorney interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the community. Legal assistance is provided in various areas of general civil law, which includes housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant issues, consumer rights, probate, special education, public benefits, and bankruptcy.

The staff attorney is also responsible for designing and executing outreach and community legal education programs. The role involves working closely with the community and low-income groups to fulfill the organization's mission of reducing poverty by ensuring equitable access to the civil justice system. Supervision and coordination of activities involving legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers may also be required. The attorney is expected to manage a caseload involving significant litigation and other justice-related advocacy, participate in evening legal clinics, and establish meaningful relationships with community organizations. Conducting intake at shelters and engaging in outreach provided by the organization are also part of the role.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Texas. While two years of prior experience handling contested civil litigation cases is preferred, experience in areas such as bankruptcy, consumer rights, housing, foreclosure prevention, and probate is also advantageous. A strong understanding of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of Evidence is required. Prior legal services, public interest work, or volunteer experience serving low-income individuals is preferred. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to think and plan strategically, with a strong work ethic and sense of accountability. Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred. An excellent attendance record and the ability to engage in occasional work-related travel are also required.

Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary for a new attorney is $73,815 per year. However, the salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher, depending on the applicant’s years of experience.

Benefits:
The position offers an excellent benefits package, which includes paid sick leave, vacation, and holidays, a retirement plan, and health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
