Job Title: Staff Attorney HCPB (Full-Time)
Job Responsibilities:
A Staff Attorney in the Housing, Consumer & Public Benefits department is responsible for providing high-quality legal representation to low-income individuals in civil legal matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Gathering evidence, advising clients about their rights, drafting legal documents, and conducting civil lawsuits.
- Interviewing clients and witnesses with cultural competence and representing clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies.
- Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the community.
- Providing legal assistance in areas such as housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant issues, consumer law, probate, special education, public benefits, and bankruptcy.
- Designing and implementing outreach and community legal education programs.
- Working closely with community groups and low-income communities to further the organization's mission of reducing poverty by providing equitable access to the civil justice system.
- Supervising and coordinating activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers.
- Handling substantial litigation and other justice-related advocacy efficiently.
- Attending evening legal clinics, devising and participating in community legal education programs, establishing meaningful relationships with community organizations, conducting intake at shelters, and participating in outreach offered by the organization.
Education and Experience Information:
- Licensed to practice law in Texas.
- Preferred experience in handling contested consumer, employment, landlord-tenant, and/or license and expunction cases.
- Strong understanding of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of Evidence.
- Preferred experience in legal services, public interest, or volunteer work serving low-income individuals.
- Fluent in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to think and plan strategically and develop and implement projects.
- Strong work ethic, sense of accountability, and excellent attendance record.
- Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary is $73,815 per year. The salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher, based on the applicant’s years of experience.
