Job Title: Staff Attorney – Medical Legal Partnership (Full-Time)
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney in the Medical Legal Partnership is responsible for providing high-quality civil legal services to low-income individuals and families, particularly those impacted by mental health issues. Key duties include:
- Gathering evidence, advising clients on their rights, drafting legal documents, and conducting civil lawsuits.
- Interviewing clients and witnesses with cultural competence, and representing clients in quasi-judicial tribunals and administrative agencies.
- Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community.
- Designing and conducting outreach and community legal education, working closely with low-income community groups and healthcare provider staff.
- Supervising and coordinating activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers.
- Developing training materials for healthcare professionals to identify systemic health-related issues correlating with legal problems.
- Handling a caseload involving substantial litigation and other justice-related advocacy.
- Attending evening legal clinics and establishing meaningful relationships with community organizations.
- Devising and participating in community legal education programs and outreach offered by the organization.
The Staff Attorney is expected to provide high-quality representation to indigent clients in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, the Texas Lawyer’s Creed, and the American Bar Association’s Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services to the Poor.
Education and Experience Information:

- Prior experience in probate, guardianship, public benefits, Veteran Benefits, and/or landlord-tenant matters is preferred.
- Legal services, public interest, social work, or volunteer experience serving low-income populations is preferred.
- Experience with mental health advocacy for persons and families is preferred.
- Progressive litigation experience or administrative law experience is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and public speaking abilities.
- Detail-oriented, efficient, organized, and self-motivated.
- Ability to interact professionally and courteously with individuals at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and partner with multidisciplinary programs, administrators, and staff to effectuate systemic change.
- Excellent computer skills, especially with Microsoft products, are preferred.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and maintain client confidentiality.
- Strategic thinking and exceptional problem-solving skills.
- Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
- Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred.
Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary for a new attorney is $73,815 per year. The salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher based on the applicant’s years of experience.
