Job Responsibilities:
The Lead Attorney at the organization is a crucial member of the legal department, with core responsibilities spanning management, specialization, direct representation, and education and advocacy. The role involves supervising a team composed of staff attorneys, DOJ-accredited representatives, paralegals, and legal assistants, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services to asylum applicants without compromising representation quality. The management duties include setting goals, strategizing for efficiency, training, and evaluating supervisees, maintaining communication, and collaborating with legal directors on intake systems and service models. The specialization aspect requires the attorney to serve as a resource for complex asylum-related issues, manage a caseload, and provide guidance to colleagues. Direct representation involves providing legal counsel and representing clients across various immigration-related agencies and courts, while ensuring accurate client record-keeping. Lastly, the education and advocacy function includes contributing to outreach programs, engaging in community education, and advocating for policy changes beneficial to immigrants.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited . law school and be licensed to practice law in Nebraska or able to obtain such a license. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of immigration law practice experience in the . is required, with 2 to 5 years of supervisory experience in a legal setting being strongly preferred. Advanced knowledge of immigration and nationality law, particularly asylum law, is crucial. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred, and candidates should have exceptional legal research, writing, and organizational skills. A demonstrated commitment to public interest law and the ability to work with diverse populations are essential. Proficiency in Office 365 applications and the ability to adapt to new data management software are also required.
Salary Information:
The position offers a salary range of $75,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience.
