Job Title: Child Services Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Child Services Attorney provides comprehensive legal guidance and services for the Department of Child Services (DCS) central and county offices, focusing on child welfare, child support, and juvenile matters. The role involves working closely with family case managers to assess issues and prepare for court hearings. Specific responsibilities include representing the State in Child in Need of Services (CHINS) cases, Termination of Parental Rights (TPR), adoptions, foster care licensing, and other legal issues related to child safety. The attorney will also represent and assist the agency in administrative and court matters, which requires trial experience. Additional duties include advising DCS staff on various program and legal areas, drafting and reviewing contracts and correspondence, serving as a liaison to the Attorney General on litigation and tort claims matters, drafting and reviewing legislation and administrative rules, performing legal research and writing assignments, providing general legal support for the Office of General Counsel, overseeing the contract process for local office attorneys, conducting legal training for Family Case Managers and attorneys, litigating CHINS and TPR cases, handling administrative matters and hearings, organizing and managing caseloads, generating appropriate pleadings, motions, discovery, and responses, delegating to and providing support for legal support staff, drafting appeals and appellate briefs, and possibly participating in committees or serving as local counsel for the Indiana Office of Attorney General on assigned cases. Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Doctorate of Jurisprudence and Indiana Bar Admission with a license in good standing. Alternatively, admission to the bar of any state within the United States with a license in good standing is acceptable, with a willingness to obtain temporary foreign license status under the conditions and limitations of rule of the Indiana Rules for Admissions to the Bar and the Discipline of Attorneys pending admission to the Indiana Bar. Candidates should possess strong legal research, writing, and litigation skills, strong communication and public speaking skills, and demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply relevant statutes, case law, and rules. The ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation is also required.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Child Services Attorney position traditionally starts at $75,010 annually but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
