Job Title: Litigation Director

Job Responsibilities:
The Litigation Director at the organization is responsible for leading and developing strategic impact litigation initiatives to address systemic injustices. This role includes ensuring the provision of high-quality legal services, carrying a caseload, and co-counseling as appropriate. The director will supervise and support staff attorneys in managing complex cases, including trial preparation and appellate advocacy. Responsibilities also involve providing legal analysis and advice on potential litigation opportunities while ensuring compliance with ethical and professional standards in all legal work.

The Litigation Director is tasked with mentoring and training staff attorneys on litigation best practices and professional development, as well as supporting law students and volunteer attorneys as needed. Conducting regular case reviews to provide guidance and feedback is also part of the role. The director will support legal teams in effectively utilizing resources and navigating challenging cases.

Collaboration with the leadership team is essential to align litigation efforts with organizational goals. The director will represent the organization in public forums, coalitions, and with community partners to advocate for clients and systemic change. Additionally, the role involves assisting with program planning, grant reporting, and organizational development. The director will take on special initiatives, including research, policy analysis, or program development, as directed by the Executive Director. Providing leadership in responding to emerging community needs and crises is also a key responsibility.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Litigation Director position must possess a degree from an accredited law school. A current North Carolina law license or eligibility to obtain licensure within six months of hire is required. The role demands a minimum of five years of legal experience, including substantial litigation experience. The candidate must have demonstrated ability to manage complex litigation, including appellate practice.

A commitment to social justice and serving low-income and marginalized communities is essential. Excellent leadership, mentoring, and organizational skills are required, along with strong written and verbal communication abilities. Experience in legal aid, civil rights, or public interest law is preferred, as well as knowledge of the unique legal challenges facing rural communities.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Litigation Director ranges from $89,618 to $121,672, depending on experience. Additional bilingual language skills that are applicable to this role may qualify for up to an additional $3,000 upon completing a language assessment test. The salary scale is predetermined based on the years of relevant professional work experience to ensure equity in pay.

Employees are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage starting on the first of the month following the start date. The organization pays 100% of the Employee and 50% of the Dependent Cost for BCBS Medical and Dental coverage. The organization pays 50% of the Employee Coverage Cost for BCBS Vision coverage. The organization pays 100% of Long-Term & Short-Term Disability Coverage, Life Insurance Coverage of 5x base salary, plus an additional $15,000 Life & AD&D Coverage. A 401k Retirement Plan is available after six months of employment.
