The **Members Only** (OSPS) in Springfield, Illinois is seeking an Assistant Counsel to join their team. This is a full-time position with an attractive benefits package and a salary range of $83,528 - $105,000, commensurate with experience. The OSPS is responsible for providing pretrial services under the Pretrial Services Act and promoting fairness and equality in the pretrial process.

Job Summary:
The Assistant Counsel at OSPS will assist the General Counsel with legal research on pretrial matters, criminal procedure, and employment law. They will interpret state and federal laws and review appellate opinions and newly filed legislation. The Assistant Counsel will also provide litigation support, analyze pending legislation, and assist with employment-related legal matters.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal opinions on criminal procedure, subpoenas, contracts, procurement, employment, and confidentiality issues.
- Review and summarize relevant appellate court opinions on pretrial matters, employment laws, and other relevant topics.
- Assist with litigation by drafting and reviewing motions and pleadings, and preparing discovery responses.
- Analyze pending legislation and prepare bill summaries.
- Track and respond to subpoenas and information requests.
- Assist with employment-related legal matters such as wage garnishments, discrimination, and wrongful termination.
- Instruct and prepare OSPS staff for testifying in court.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal legislation and case law by reviewing pretrial standards and practices.
- Assist with internal investigations.
- Review contracts, grant applications, grant agreements, procurement documents, and leases.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Illinois.
- 5+ years of professional working experience in a public or private organization.
- 1+ years of practicing law.
- Ability to be LEADS certified.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License and proof of automobile insurance.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of practice in law.
- 3+ years of experience with legal research and writing.
- 1+ years of experience drafting, researching, or analyzing legislation.
- 1+ years of experience with criminal procedure in Illinois or federal courts.
- 1+ years of experience with preparing and/or delivering training on statutory or regulatory provisions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
- Professional office working environment requiring telephone usage and document processing.
- Ability to travel, including overnight stays, as required.
