The **Members Only** offers an exciting opportunity for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students to gain hands-on experience in the field of law. As an intern with NJOPD, you will have the chance to work alongside attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing top-notch legal representation to indigent individuals.
At NJOPD, we believe in providing our clients with the best possible legal representation, and our interns play a crucial role in this mission. Our interns gain real-world experience in various aspects of the legal process, including investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation, and advocacy. In addition, we offer excellent training and mentorship opportunities to help our interns develop their skills and advance their careers.
We offer internship opportunities year-round, with opportunities available statewide. Whether you are a college junior or senior, or a graduate student in fields such as social work or paralegal studies, we have opportunities for you to gain valuable experience and contribute to our mission of providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals.
As an intern with NJOPD, you may have the opportunity to assist with investigations, locate and interview witnesses, serve subpoenas, research and gather information and documents, conduct field investigations, draft reports, attend court proceedings and training programs, and more. Graduate students in fields such as social work can also apply to intern in our specialized units, including Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy. Additionally, we offer internship opportunities specifically for paralegal students.
Our internship application process is competitive, and we consider applications on a rolling basis. To apply, please submit a cover letter explaining why you are interested in an internship with NJOPD, your areas of interest, geographic preferences or limitations, and your availability. Applications must be received between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall internship, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring internship, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer internship.
Please note that in addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must also be interviewed by a regional office and/or the Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
About NJOPD:
NJOPD provides first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent parents whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, represent children who have been removed from their homes, represent individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, represent individuals facing Megan’s Law tier classification, and represent individuals seeking post-conviction relief. We also have specialized units, including the Office of Mental Health Advocacy, the Special Hearings Unit, and the Conviction Integrity Unit, as well as programs such as Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters.
