The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office offers law students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in criminal law through their Fall Certified Legal Internship program. This internship is open to all law students and provides valuable experience in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The program is administered by Assistant District Attorney Sarah Weikart, who can be contacted for any questions or concerns.

Units within the Office where interns may be placed include:

Fall applications for the internship program will open on July 1, 2025, and close on Aug. 8, 2025. The program operates out of the main office located in the Allegheny County Courthouse and offices located in the Frick along Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with over 100 attorneys who specialize in various areas of expertise. They will be placed in a specific unit based on their skills, interests, and the needs of the Office. The program also offers the chance to appear in court on behalf of the Commonwealth under the direct supervision of an Assistant District Attorney, which may include guilty pleas, suppression motions, and non-jury trials.

To be eligible for this program, students must have successfully completed an Evidence course and submit an Application for Certification for Formal Participation in Legal Matters by Law Students Under . 321 and 322, along with the Dean's Certification Under . 321 and 322. This is an excellent opportunity for law students to gain valuable courtroom experience before finishing their studies.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office serves as the Chief Law Enforcement Office of the county and accepts referrals from over 100 active police departments. They are also responsible for approving complaints filed by private citizens. The Office employs more than 100 attorneys and interns will have the opportunity to work with them in various areas of expertise.

The internship program offers a wide range of duties to interns, including legal research and writing, clerical duties, and assisting attorneys in trial and hearing preparation. They will also have the chance to accompany attorneys to conduct plea negotiations, jury selection, pre-trial motions, and trials (Jury and Non-Jury).
