City of Champaign is seeking a Law Clerk to join their Legal Department. The position offers a salary of per hour and is open for temporary employment during the summer of 2025 and the 2025-2026 school year. The ideal candidate will have completed at least the first year of law school and have a good knowledge of federal and state law. They should also have experience or interest in public service and be available to work 15 or more hours per week starting May 19, 2025. The Law Clerk will have the opportunity to apply theoretical legal principles to real-world situations, conduct legal research, and draft pleadings for court cases. They will also have the chance to appear in court and work on administrative tasks in the Legal Department. Responsibilities of Position:
- Apply theoretical legal principles to real-world situations
- Conduct legal research on topics related to municipal law
- Draft pleadings for court cases and internal legal memos
- Appear in court under supervision of City attorneys
- Transfer documents to and from courthouse
- Assist with administrative tasks in Legal Department
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of first year of law school
- Knowledge of federal and state law
- Familiarity with legal reference works and methods of legal research
- Ability to seek, analyze, and organize facts and evidence
- Professional judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Timely completion of assigned tasks
- Strong oral and written communication skills
