Job Responsibilities:
- Interns will gain hands-on experience in the practice of law and oral advocacy by working in prosecutors' offices.
- They will handle in-court assignments typically managed by assistant prosecutors, providing them with practical courtroom experience.
- Interns will engage in various legal activities such as plea negotiations, bench trials, formal hearings, and case reviews.
- They may participate in family court proceedings and have the opportunity to prepare and conduct one or more jury trials during the summer.
- Interns will work under the guidance of experienced prosecutors and are expected to represent the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings pursuant to Michigan Court Rule .
- The internship aims to provide students with a realistic view of the criminal justice system and the workings of a prosecutor's office.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be law students who have completed at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026.
- Candidates should have at least one semester of law school remaining after the internship's completion.
- Preference is given to students who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026.
- Candidates must be Michigan residents or demonstrate an intention to practice law in Michigan upon graduation.
- An interest in the criminal justice system, specifically in prosecution, is required.
Salary Information:
- Interns will receive a salary of $9, for an 11-week internship, based on a 40-hour workweek at a rate of per hour.
- The internship is an at-will position, meaning interns serve at the pleasure of the host county prosecutor.
Additional Information:
- The internship program is administered by the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC), a state agency providing training and technical assistance to Michigan's county prosecutors.
- Interns are required to attend a four-day training and orientation session in May 2026, which will cover the duties and responsibilities of prosecutors and provide an overview of legal subjects and trial advocacy.
- Training costs, including most meals and materials, are covered, and lodging is provided for interns living more than 50 miles from the training location.
- There are approximately 20 internships available across various locations in Michigan, and flexibility in geographic location can increase the chance of selection.
