Job Responsibilities:
Interns participating in the 2026 Summer Intern Program at a reputed firm will gain practical experience in the field of law and oral advocacy by working within prosecutors’ offices. The responsibilities include:
- Handling in-court assignments typically managed by assistant prosecutors.
- Engaging in plea negotiations, bench trials, formal hearings, and case reviews.
- Participating in various family court proceedings.
- Preparing and potentially conducting one or more jury trials.
- Representing the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings under the authority of Michigan Court Rule .
- Providing additional summer assistance to prosecutors’ offices.
- Attending a four-day training and orientation session to cover duties and responsibilities of prosecutors, as well as legal subjects and trial advocacy.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates should be law students who have completed at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026. Additional requirements and preferences include:
- The applicant must be a student in good standing and have at least one semester of law school remaining after the internship.
- Preference is given to candidates who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026.
- Candidates should be Michigan residents or show intent to practice law in Michigan upon graduation.
- An articulable interest in the criminal justice system, particularly in prosecution, is required.
Salary Information:
Interns will receive a salary of $9, for an 11-week internship, based on a 40-hour workweek at the rate of per hour. The positions are at-will, and interns serve at the pleasure of the host county prosecutor.
Application Process:
Applicants must submit their applications by September 26, 2025, for direct applicants, with compliance to school deadlines for those participating in on-campus interviews. Required application materials include a cover letter, resume, pre-interview survey, law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable), and a writing sample.
Interns will be selected through interviews conducted by the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC), which is a state agency responsible for training and providing technical assistance to Michigan’s county prosecutors. PACC will recommend candidates to host county prosecutors, who will make the final hiring decision. Additional interviews may be requested during the selection process.
Interns must attend a mandatory training session prior to starting the internship, which will take place in the Lansing area in May 2026. While the training period is unpaid, costs for most meals and materials are covered, and lodging is provided for those living more than 50 miles from the training location.
