Job Title: Accountant (Paralegal)
Job Responsibilities:
The Accountant (Paralegal) will be an integral part of the Paralegal Team supporting the Financial Services and Capital Markets business unit at the law firm. The role primarily involves a comprehensive range of estate administration tasks. Key responsibilities include assisting attorneys in administering estates, funding post-death irrevocable trusts, preparing necessary documents, handling probate, filing estate-related tax returns, and managing client cases.
Essential job functions include:
- Preparing various tax returns, including Estate Tax Returns and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns.
- Maintaining financial records of trusts, performing trust accounting, and auditing accounts.
- Maintaining general ledger accounts, reconciling broker statements, and preparing payables and bank deposits.
- Obtaining and reconciling 1099 and K-1 statements.
- Handling irrevocable trust funding and administration post-death.
- Administering probate, including drafting probate pleadings.
- Acting as an expert in accounting, providing guidance and best practices to team members.
- Maintaining close personal contact with clients and financial advisors.
- Meeting an annual billable hour requirement of 1600 hours.
- Developing technical proficiency in database use, internet/electronic research, and project folder/electronic file maintenance.
- Independently organizing and managing files or delegating similar tasks to appropriate business professionals and supervising the same.
- Sustaining attention to detail and quality of work.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Position-specific requirements include:
- A minimum of 10 years of Trusts & Estates experience is preferred.
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, with a CPA designation preferred.
- Candidates must have excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proven success in a fast-paced, continually changing environment is essential.
- The ability to prioritize and excellent time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is a must.
- Familiarity with tax and trust accounting software is necessary.
- Experience with document database programs and/or software is required.
- Significant client case management experience is expected.
- Exceptional attention to detail is crucial.
- The ability to interact effectively and professionally and provide exceptional service internally and externally at all times is mandatory.
- The role requires being highly organized, able to prioritize workflow, and manage projects.
- Candidates should perform effectively with little or no supervision within established time limits and ongoing deadlines.
- A two-year degree is required, while a Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program is preferred. Significant, substantive related experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
