Job Responsibilities
The Paralegal/Victim Coordinator position involves providing professional legal support to attorneys within the organization. The primary duties include:
- Assisting with the preparation, evaluation, and resolution of adult criminal, civil, juvenile delinquency, and child protection cases.
- Working independently and collaboratively with fellow coordinators to manage all professional support aspects from the inception of a case through its resolution.
- Obtaining evidence, drafting legal documents, and gathering discoverable items.
- Communicating regularly and appropriately with victims and witnesses.
- Locating, subpoenaing, and preparing witnesses for court.
- Providing materials and data for litigation, case management, grant funding, and responding to data practices requests.
- Collecting and securing documents for case evaluations, charging, workflow monitoring, and trial preparation.
- Drafting legal documents such as complaints, petitions, memoranda, and victim/witness supplements.
- Maintaining a professional support staff-level legal understanding of applicable court rules, statutes, and case law.
- Training and presenting to law enforcement, legal, human services, and the public on case charging, complex investigations, and crime victim and witness issues.
- Interviewing and establishing communication lines with victims and witnesses.
- Serving as a liaison between victims/witnesses and various professionals, including attorneys, law enforcement, and court personnel.
- Assisting with gathering facts and evidence, developing and maintaining documentation, and participating in trial preparation.
- Preparing trial exhibits, coordinating court appearances, and creating trial notebooks.
- Monitoring the litigation process and consulting on litigation strategies.
- Assisting victims and witnesses with logistical needs such as securing time off from work and providing emotional support.
- Preparing and submitting grant applications and reports, proposing workload efficiencies, and recommending program enhancements.
- Performing other duties as assigned or apparent.
Education and Experience Information
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Two years of professional work experience in fields related to criminology, criminal justice, juvenile justice, law offices, law enforcement, probation, victim/witness advocacy or services, social work, government, or other related areas.
- Reliable means of transportation and ability to travel to multiple locations.
- Experience using a personal computer and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Minnesota adult criminal, juvenile justice/child protection, and civil court systems.
- Familiarity with Minnesota legal terminology, procedures, resources, rules, and law.
- Proficiency in interviewing techniques.
- Understanding of local, state, court, departmental, community, and law enforcement resources.
- Skilled in using software programs and database tracking systems.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Capability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Decision-making ability in compliance with laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and practices.
- Good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Salary Information
The salary for the Paralegal/Victim Coordinator position ranges from to hourly.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- The position is primarily performed indoors (approximately 90% of the time).
- Requires frequent in-person and telephone contact with law enforcement, witnesses, and victims.

- May involve frequent attendance at meetings outside regular work hours.
- Infrequent exposure to health hazards and accidents; low level of physical effort required.
Extent of Supervision or Guidance Provided:
- Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief (Criminal/Juvenile/Civil) Division.
Responsibility for Public Contact:
- Moderate public contact responsibility.
Supervision of Others:
- This position does not involve supervision of others.
Salary and Hours of Work, Testing, and Interview Dates
Hours of Work:
- The usual work schedule is from 8:00 . to 4:30 ., Monday through Friday, with potential evening and weekend hours.
Interview Date:
- Interview dates are to be determined, and invitations will be sent based on an assessment of education and experience. A background check and/or physical, drug, and psychological exam may be required before appointment.
