Job Title: Assistant Managing Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Managing Clerk plays a crucial role in supporting the litigation attorneys at the law firm by performing a variety of responsibilities. These include:
- Electronic filing of documents in all state and federal courts.
- Reviewing documents being filed, both electronically and by hand, to ensure compliance with applicable rules.
- Researching and responding to procedural questions regarding service and filing of court papers, requiring extensive knowledge of court rules and procedures.
- Maintaining the firm’s general litigation calendar.
- Docketing and calendaring case information on the Compulaw docketing system, particularly for matters in California state and federal courts.
- Communicating with court and agency personnel to obtain information about the status of motions and applications, and confirming conference and hearing dates.
- Processing nationwide service of process requests and document retrievals.
- Advising litigation attorneys and personnel on the form of pleadings and interpretation of court rules in various jurisdictions.
- Obtaining exemplars and templates of documents filed in various courts in response to requests for precedent.
- Monitoring and disseminating docket sheets of various federal and state court cases.
- Conducting docket research on platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, CourtLink, PACER, and eTrack.
- Performing various projects and tasks as needed.
Education and Experience Information:
- A BA degree is highly preferred or equivalent experience/education. A paralegal certificate is also preferred.
- A minimum of five years of progressive experience working in a Managing Clerk or Managing Attorney Department, and/or Litigation Docketing Department.
- Experience with rules-based calendaring software is required, with a strong preference for experience using Compulaw.
- Experience docketing case deadlines in California state and federal matters is required.
- The candidate should possess the ability to research, analyze, and summarize issues in writing.
- The ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make sound judgments is necessary.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills are required.
- The ability to work independently in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, and sort priorities with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines and business objectives is essential.
- Effective oral and written communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and handle sensitive issues and situations with the highest confidentiality.
- Proficient skills/knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, and Excel, as well as Adobe PDF Creator (or equivalent) are required.
- The ability to work overtime when required is necessary.
- Knowledge of Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, CPLR, Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure, and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure is important.
Salary Information:
The base annual pay range for the Assistant Managing Clerk role is between $90,000 and $125,000. The base pay will vary and depend on skills, qualifications, experience, and location, and will also take into account internal equity. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits dependent on the position will also be offered.
