NJOPD offers hands-on internships for law students interested in gaining real-world experience in the legal field. As a volunteer intern, you will have the opportunity to work with experienced attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing top-notch legal representation to indigent individuals. This internship provides excellent training and mentorship opportunities and is available year-round and statewide.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, and handle cases involving involuntary commitment to State psychiatric facilities, Megan's Law tier classification, and post-conviction relief. We also represent clients in Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program matters, and have a Forensic Science Unit.
Internship Responsibilities
As an intern with NJOPD, you will assist attorneys and staff with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing and/or systemic projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, assisting with trial preparation, participating in client and witness interviews, and observing and appearing in courtroom proceedings. You will also have the opportunity to attend training programs and may appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys if you have completed at least 2 years of law school.

In your cover letter, please explain why you are seeking an internship with NJOPD, your areas of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and your availability. We accept applications on a rolling basis and have specific application periods for each season: June 15th to July 31st for Fall internships, October 15th to November 30th for Spring internships, and December 15th to April 15th for Summer internships.
Selection Process
All applicants must be interviewed by our regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD. We take the selection process seriously and strive to provide a valuable and educational experience for our interns.
