Internship Opportunities with the **Members Only**

NJOPD is currently seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join our team as interns/externs for the Fall term. This hands-on experience provides students with the opportunity to work with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing top-notch legal representation to our clients. Through this internship, students will gain valuable real-world experience in various aspects of the legal field, including investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation, and advocacy. NJOPD offers excellent training and mentorship opportunities and internships are available year-round in various locations throughout the state.

About NJOPD

NJOPD is committed to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our team of attorneys defends individuals facing criminal charges, represents parents whose children have been removed due to allegations of abuse and neglect, advocates for children who have been removed from their homes, defends individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, represents individuals facing Megan's Law tier classification, and assists those seeking post-conviction relief. We also handle cases related to Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Programs, and have a dedicated Forensic Science Unit.

Internships for Law Students

This internship is open to 2Ls and 3Ls who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in the legal field. As an intern/extern with NJOPD, you will have the opportunity to assist attorneys and staff with a variety of tasks related to the representation of our clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, participating in client and witness interviews, observing and appearing in court proceedings, and attending training programs. Interns who have completed at least two years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.

In your cover letter, please explain why you are interested in interning with NJOPD, your practice areas of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and your availability, including your anticipated start and end date, number of hours, and schedule.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall term, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring term, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer term.

Please note that in addition to submitting application materials, all applicants will be interviewed by a regional office and/or the Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and undergo a screening process before being offered an internship/externship with NJOPD.
