Paralegal – Family Preservation Project
JOB TITLE: Paralegal, Family Preservation Project. Full Time, permanent, non-exempt, staff position.
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, from 9:00am-5:00pm. Thirty-five (35) hours per week.
REPORTS TO: Supervising Attorney, Family Law and CLAVC Units
HYBRID WORK: The paralegal is required to work in-person at least two (2) days a week.
SALARY RANGE: Salary is based on a union scale with a base wage of $51,500 plus experience credit if applicable.
LANGUAGE(S): In addition to English, candidates who are fluent in either Spanish and/or Portuguese are strongly preferred. Language competencies will be tested during the interview process.
Summary of Position:
The organization provides free civil legal services to protect and advance the rights and well-being of people living in poverty, people aged 60 years and older, people with disabilities, and otherwise disenfranchised individuals in the communities it serves. The organization seeks a paralegal who will be part of a team launching a new project to help parents involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). The goal of the Family Preservation Project (FPP) is to ensure that families receive the necessary help to address issues of concern to DCF, thereby preventing the removal of children from their homes. This project aims to keep children safe with their families, minimize the emotional trauma caused by removal, and allow the foster care system to focus its resources on children who truly need its protection. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In partnership with the attorney and parent partner, the Paralegal will help to launch a new project to provide civil legal aid to families with open cases with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF).
- Conduct strength-based intakes to determine points of vulnerability and areas of legal advocacy.
- In partnership with the attorney, provide case management assistance and follow-up with team members and clients on tasks.
- Help facilitate weekly FPP team meetings and keep detailed notes.
- Assist the attorney in drafting legal documents and performing research.
- May help clients schedule health and other appointments, enroll children in school, and assist with applications for government benefit and housing programs.
- Contribute to the development of program materials for the Family Preservation Project, including outreach PowerPoint presentations.
- Participate in statewide legal services coalition groups focused on issues related to child welfare law and related matters and participate in training or other programs related to FPP.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INFORMATION:
- Bachelor’s or Associate degree or Paralegal Certificate preferred.
- 1-3 years relevant work experience interacting with survivors of trauma, abuse, neglect, and/or discrimination.
- Prior experience interacting with individuals with mental health conditions, substance abuse disorders, and/or disabilities.
- Prior experience or knowledge of the child welfare system in MA.
- Spoken fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred. Language competencies will be tested during the interview process.

- Experience and comfort working with electronic case management systems, and Microsoft 365 platform (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to travel throughout the service area and to occasional outreach events.
