Job Title: Senior Claims Specialist, Excess Casualty
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Claims Specialist in Excess Casualty at the company is tasked with a variety of responsibilities aimed at effectively managing and resolving claims. These responsibilities include:
- Reviewing excess casualty claims to assess the nature of loss, coverage provided, and scope of the claim, and guiding the strategic direction regarding settlement or disposition of claims.
- Conducting timely evaluations, reserving, and disposition of assigned claims within a best practices claim environment, ensuring thorough documentation of the claim process.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners, serving as the lead contact within the claims department for assigned claims.
- Escalating coverage issues and recommending outside coverage counsel assignments for approval when warranted.
- Managing costs, including the use of counsel and litigation costs.
- Fostering relationships and communicating extensively with senior executives, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, underwriters, insureds, and both external and internal auditors.
- Investigating potentially fraudulent claims and taking appropriate action.
- Making recommendations for the settlement or disposition of claims.
- Identifying opportunities for contribution, subrogation, and risk transfer.
- Preparing required reports for senior management.
- Traveling to mediations or settlement conferences as required.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
The role requires the following educational qualifications and experience:
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required, while a Juris Doctor (JD) is considered a plus.
- The candidate should have 7 to 10+ years of claims experience, with a minimum of 3 to 5 years in general liability claims adjusting. Experience in excess casualty claims is a plus.
- Experience handling New York Labor Law, Product Liability, and Complex litigation claims is advantageous.
- Proficiency in independently analyzing coverage, identifying issues, and preparing coverage correspondence is essential.
- Experience in drafting coverage correspondence, writing coverage letters, and responding to/issuing tenders is required.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, both internally and externally, as well as the ability to identify and resolve complex, disputed claims.
- The candidate should be an analytical thinker capable of driving results using all facets of the legal and claims processes.
- A solid understanding of both immediate claim issues and the broader portfolio impact and customer service impact of coverage disputes and issues is important.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary, with the ability to deal effectively with people with conflicting expectations, differing opinions, and multiple viewpoints.
- Demonstrated experience handling casualty claims involving a wide variety of loss scenarios, as well as reporting and presenting about the same to senior management.
- In-depth knowledge of claims, litigation, arbitration, and trial processes, as well as excellent analytical, investigative, and negotiating skills, are required.
- Technical knowledge, skills, and training within the field are needed, including complex coverage analysis and experience.
- General Liability, Auto, and Garage keepers Coverage knowledge is required.
- Confidence in coverage evaluation and reserving, along with excellent writing and editing skills, are necessary.
- Solid negotiation and settlement skills are needed.
- A supervisory perspective, with experience providing direction and authority to adjusters, is a plus.
- Familiarity with KPI, Data, and Metrics is considered an advantage.
- Valid licenses by state are required, and the ability to add states to certifications as needed.
- Travel is associated with this role for activities such as team management, court proceedings, mediations, and settlement.
