Job Title: Staff Attorney – Family Unit
Job Responsibilities:
A staff attorney in the Family Unit is responsible for a variety of legal tasks aimed at providing support and representation to low-income individuals in family civil legal matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Gathering evidence and advising clients about their legal rights.
- Drafting legal documents and conducting civil lawsuits.
- Interviewing clients and witnesses with cultural competence.
- Representing clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of the government.
- Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the broader client community.
- Providing legal assistance in family law areas such as divorce, child custody, protective orders, and child support and enforcement proceedings.
- Designing and executing outreach and community legal education programs.
- Collaborating closely with community and low-income community groups to further the mission of reducing poverty by providing equitable access to the civil justice system.
- Supervising and coordinating activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers.
- Handling a caseload involving substantial litigation and other justice-related advocacy.
- Attending evening legal clinics and participating in community legal education programs.
- Establishing meaningful relationships with community organizations and conducting intake at shelters.
- Participating in outreach initiatives offered by the organization.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must be licensed to practice law in Texas.
- Three years of prior experience handling contested family law cases is preferred.
- Strong understanding of the Texas Family Code, Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and Rules of Evidence.
- Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience serving low-income persons is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Ability to think and plan strategically and to develop and implement projects.
- A strong work ethic and a sense of accountability are essential.
- Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred.
- An excellent attendance record is necessary.
- Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary for a new attorney is $73,815 per year. However, the salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher, based on the applicant’s years of experience.
