Job Title: Staff Attorney - Dallas LAPSA
Job Responsibilities:
A Staff Attorney at the organization is responsible for providing direct legal services and resources to qualifying low-income individuals in Dallas, Texas. The role involves representing clients in civil legal matters, including but not limited to housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant issues, consumer and debt collection, family, and probate law. The attorney must gather evidence, advise clients about their rights, draft legal documents, and conduct civil lawsuits. Additionally, the attorney will represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government, interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community.
The Staff Attorney is also tasked with designing and carrying out outreach and community legal education, working closely with the community and low-income community groups. The attorney must foster supportive relationships with the local bar, area law schools, the judiciary and court staff, and establish meaningful relationships with other organizations. The role may include supervising and coordinating activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers.
Participation in organization and statewide projects and meetings is required, ensuring compliance with the requirements of all funding sources, the organization’s policies and procedures, and an attorney’s responsibilities under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, the Texas Lawyer’s Creed, and the American Bar Association’s Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services to the Poor.
Education and Experience Information:
- Licensed to practice law in Texas with a minimum of 3 years preferred.
- Prior experience handling contested family and/or housing matters is preferred.
- Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience serving low-income persons is preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, serving the indigent, or other relevant experience, including progressive litigation experience.

- Ability to think and plan strategically and to demonstrate and promote a positive work ethic and work environment.
- Detail-oriented, efficient, organized, and self-motivated.
- Skilled in leadership, mentoring, and training.
- Ability to supervise and direct support staff effectively.
- Ability to develop and implement projects.
- Ability to professionally interact with clients and court staff in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment while maintaining client confidentiality, integrity, and discretion in the performance of all duties.
- Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred but not required.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary for a new attorney at the organization is $73,815 per year. The salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher, based on the applicant’s years of experience.
