Job Title: Attorney III
Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney III at the organization is responsible for handling and litigating workers’ compensation cases and assignments of above-average complexity. This includes cases that have significant impact on the California business environment, involve high political and media implications, and have substantial potential dollar amounts at risk. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with internal and external clients to effectively represent the organization and its insureds.
- Drafting pleadings, correspondences, and communications.
- Conducting thorough discovery processes.
- Negotiating and drafting settlements.
- Making court appearances, including trials, and handling appeals as necessary.
- Advising Claims and internal business partners on legal issues and decisions.
- Representing the organization at hearings, arbitrations, depositions, trials, and on petitions for reconsideration.
- Developing litigation strategies for complex workers’ compensation cases, including serious and willful misconduct claims.
- Conducting legal research and analyzing applicable legal principles and precedents.
- Preparing witnesses and maintaining communication with stakeholders and the courts.
- Providing training and maintaining proficient knowledge of workers compensation issues.
- Performing administrative duties and maintaining user mastery over the organization’s computer-based technology.
- Serving as a legal liaison and assisting or leading projects/initiatives as requested by Legal Management.
- Reviewing and advising on new and existing legislation impacting the organization.
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires active membership in the California State Bar. The Attorney III role demands five years of legal experience in the practice of law. This experience should include handling complex and sensitive legal work with broad discretion and minimal supervision. The candidate should have a proficient level of knowledge in California workers' compensation laws and legal principles, as well as the ability to write effective legal documents and advocate for the organization both verbally and in writing.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Attorney III classification is $10, to $14, per month. New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate salary range when applicable. Placement to an alternate salary range may be based on education or experience identified in the state application.
Working Conditions:
- The position offers the flexibility of remote work, but the candidate will be required to attend some hearings and other calendar commitments in-person.
- Employees are expected to work all necessary hours to accomplish their assignments and fulfill their responsibilities, averaging forty hours of work per week.
- Travel may be necessary to fulfill duties, occasionally from overnight to five days in duration.
