Job Title: General Counsel and Director, Legal Services
Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years of post-bar experience as a practicing attorney
- At least 5 years of management experience in a high volume, dynamic environment
- Experience in labor and employment law, litigation management, public access laws, real estate law, and transactions and business law
- Familiarity with the California judicial system, court administration, operations, and procedures
Salary: $18,881 - $22,658 per month
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and services to the Chief Justice, Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, trial courts, and to the Judicial Council and its staff organization in various areas, including court administration, labor and employment law, litigation management, public access laws, real estate and facilities transactions, and business operations
- Oversee legal advice and services to the Chief Justice in her role as Chair of the Judicial Council and to various Judicial Council advisory bodies
- Address highly sensitive legal issues and identify risks and concerns affecting the judicial branch
- Collaborate with the Chief Legal Officer and management team to develop and implement office goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
- Communicate with justice system partners, the Legislature, and the Governor's Administration on issues affecting the judicial branch
- Provide updates and recommendations on policy and legal issues to the Chief Legal Officer and Executive Office
- Serve as a member of the Senior Management team and provide input on Judicial Council governance, operations, and programs
Qualifications:
- Juris doctor degree
- Active membership with the State Bar of California
- Strong leadership skills and ability to create an environment that supports employees and encourages high-quality work
- Experience in management, goal setting, employee development, program development and evaluation, employee supervision, and problem-solving and conflict resolution
- Knowledge of labor and employment law, litigation management, public access laws, real estate law, and business law
- Familiarity with the California judicial system and court procedures
- Ability to interact successfully with various stakeholders, including judges, court and agency staff, the Legislature, the Governor's Administration, and the public
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and integrity while representing the Judicial Council and judicial branch
