Job Title: Senior Legal Staff Associate
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Legal Staff Associate plays a crucial role within the organization's General Counsel's Office, specifically focused on consumer protection and licensing enforcement across various industries. The responsibilities include:
- Supervising and monitoring staff performance to ensure timely and proper completion of assignments and coordinating the flow of legal documents during investigations and litigation.
- Performing supervisory duties that utilize staff effectively and appropriately, fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.
- Ensuring the timely and effective processing of settlement agreements, tribunal/court filings, and other legal documents.
- Overseeing mail distribution coordination and safeguarding physical files.
- Researching and managing case information using databases such as CLEAR and PACER.
- Ensuring staff participation in scheduled trainings, including EEO training, and encouraging professional development.
- Processing timesheets and leave requests for supervised staff.
- Submitting written performance evaluations for staff.
- Assisting attorneys with subpoena preparation, file organization, and summons drafting for attorney approval.
- Reviewing and analyzing business records, complaints, operational data, and other documentation.
- Conducting database, online, and published material research for investigations.
- Interviewing witnesses and consumers, and potentially testifying at hearings and signing affidavits.
- Performing other tasks and assignments as directed by supervisors.
Education and Experience Information:
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization.
- One year of satisfactory clerical experience.
- Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 keystrokes (20 words) per minute.
Preferred Skills:
- At least two years of supervisory experience.
- Ability to train staff and evaluate performance.
- Proficient in writing and editing performance evaluations.
- Experience with reviewing and approving staff’s time and leave in NYCAPS.
- Excellent verbal, written, and professional interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to conduct database and online research of government and business records.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Excellent judgment, discretion, and ability to handle legal issues, privileged and confidential information, and sensitive documents appropriately.
- Ability to meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment and maintain flexibility to shift priorities quickly and accurately.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Acrobat Professional software, and various online resources.
- Knowledge and understanding of litigation terminology and processes, and ability to read and understand legal rules and regulations.
- Experience working with attorneys in roles such as legal assistant, paralegal, project management, or process improvement is preferred.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $45, – $62,.
Additional Information:
This position may be eligible for remote work for up to two days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program. It is open to permanent employees in the title, those eligible for the 55a Program, and those reachable on the civil service list. The position requires New York City residency within 90 days of appointment, with certain exceptions for City employees with two continuous years of service.
