Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel, Tort Division
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Tort Division of the organization is responsible for defending the City of New York in personal injury and property damage cases, primarily in State Court. Attorneys in the Vertical Units handle Tort cases from inception through resolution. Key responsibilities include:
- Engaging in discovery processes
- Taking and defending depositions
- Writing and arguing motions
- Engaging in settlement negotiations
- Serving as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd chair during trials, depending on experience level
In addition to these core responsibilities, attorneys have the opportunity to participate in a flexible work program. After orientation, attorneys can choose between two remote work options: working remotely on a limited and irregular basis or participating in a pilot program that allows working from home two set days per week. These arrangements require approval and consideration of the department's needs, with more than 50% staff coverage required each day. In-person responsibilities take precedence over remote work days if necessary.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position must meet the following qualifications:
- Graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school
- Admission and good standing with the New York State (NYS) bar
- A minimum of one year of civil litigation experience
Preferred candidates will have significant experience in civil litigation, trial proceedings, or settlement negotiations. The salary range for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position is $87, to $175,.
