The Law Firm is currently seeking applications for our 2026 Summer Associate Program in our . office locations, except Chicago. Job Title: 2027 IP Litigation/Patent Prosecution Summer Associate
Experience: Law student in good standing at an ABA accredited law school, with a projected graduation date of spring 2027
Salary: $4,327/week

Responsibilities:

- Draft patent applications as a patent prosecution summer associate
- Conduct research and draft memos for litigation cases as a patent litigation summer associate
- Attend client meetings, depositions, and trials
- Explore the city with our attorneys as your guides
- Attend the firmwide Summer Associate Retreat for training, networking, and fun

Does The Law Firm hire summer associates with a science or engineering background only?
We require a scientific or technical background for summer associates in the Patent Litigation and Patent Prosecution groups. However, we also regularly hire outstanding students without a scientific or technical background for other groups such as Trademark & Copyright.

Does The Law Firm hire first-year law (1L) students?
Yes, we encourage 1L students to apply in late fall following their law school guidelines. We also offer a 1L Diversity Fellowship Program.

Does The Law Firm hire third-year (3L) students for summer associate positions?
3L hiring depends on practice group and office need. We typically do not interview 3Ls during on-campus interviews, but may consider them if they submit an online application for an advertised position.

Can I apply for a summer associate position at multiple offices of The Law Firm?
Yes, you can apply for multiple offices, but only one application is necessary. Let us know your preferred offices and we will review and make decisions independently.

What is the callback process?
If selected for a callback interview, you will receive an invitation from our recruiting department. During the interview, you will meet with attorneys and have a lunch with some of them.

When will I hear back from The Law Firm after a callback interview?
You can expect to hear back within one to two weeks. We provide a reasonable deadline to respond to offers, in accordance with your law school's offer policies.

Can I split my summer between The Law Firm and another firm?
We handle requests to split summers on a case-by-case basis. We strongly encourage students to spend the entire summer with us, but if approved, we require a minimum of eight weeks within the dates of our program.

Does The Law Firm pay for state bar exam expenses?
We reimburse new law school graduates for one standard bar review course and bar registration fees for the state in which they will work for our firm. We also offer a salary advance of $15,000 to help with expenses while studying for the bar exam.

Does The Law Firm cover state bar membership fees?
We cover mandatory state bar fees for our attorneys in the jurisdiction in which they work for our firm. We also pay Virginia bar dues for attorneys in our Washington, . office who practice regularly in the . District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Does The Law Firm reimburse for moving expenses?
Yes, we cover relocation expenses for new attorneys from outside the area in which they will practice, including a house-hunting trip, subject to our relocation policy. We also provide a lump sum payment to assist with bar-related expenses.
