Job Title: Senior Counsel, In-House Coverage Litigation
Job Responsibilities:
- Represent the company in state and federal court for the litigation and resolution of Commercial and Personal lines insurance coverage disputes in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and throughout New England.
- Serve as lead counsel on moderately complex to complex coverage matters from inception through all phases of litigation.
- Argue motions and handle trials, status conferences, and other substantive and procedural matters in court on behalf of the company.
- Determine appropriate legal strategies and positions, and provide advice on possible outcomes, awards, and settlements.
- Draft motions, briefs, pleadings, written discovery, and other legal documents to protect the legal interests of the company.
- Propose, prepare, respond to, and evaluate oral and written discovery.
- Prepare and review annual legal fees budget for assigned cases.
- Maintain independent contact with clients, witnesses, experts, and adversaries through counsel.
- Provide recommendations and case analysis to business partners on appropriate file handling strategy.
- Complete administrative tasks such as time reporting and closed case reports.
- Adhere to standards of excellence in file management.
- Provide high quality, cost-effective legal advice and recommendations on complex matters.
- Research legal principles and precedents within area of specialization.
- Identify unique issues in assigned matters and recommend appropriate responses.
- Proactively identify and communicate risk to customers and provide recommendations on mitigation.
- Advise senior business clients on financially significant and complex matters.
- Maintain awareness of judicial climate and legal developments.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships.
- Mentor and coach less senior attorneys and staff.
- Make effective use of technology and automation in legal practice.
- Ensure timely submission of work product.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctorate; graduate of an accredited law school.
- Minimum of six years' experience as a practicing attorney.
- Admitted to the Bar in good standing in Massachusetts, with additional admission or willingness to gain admission to the Bar in contiguous states.
- Six to ten years of prior experience in the litigation of complex insurance coverage disputes.
- Understanding and awareness of principles of Auto, General Liability, and/or Property insurance coverage.
Salary Information:
- The annual base salary range for this position is $142, – $235,.
- Salary will be determined by factors such as the scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials, and experience.
- Employees are eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.
