Job Title: Social Work Paralegal
Department: Social Services - Child Welfare
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist Department of Social Services attorneys with various legal duties and services, focusing on analysis, organization, and preparation of legal work and departmental administrative needs.
- Draft, circulate, revise, and file documents related to juvenile petitions, adult protective services petitions, and extended foster care petitions.
- Serve as the department’s primary notary, ensuring notarizations occur in-person for signature verifications on petitions.
- Accept subpoenas served to the County and assist with drafting court orders.
- Create and distribute an internal court calendar to the agency.
- Compose and distribute pleadings and court orders resulting from hearings.
- Communicate information regarding court procedures and scheduling.
- Compose and type juvenile court orders from various court hearings, including reviews, adjudications, dispositions, post termination of parental rights, termination of parental rights, and obstruction petitions.
- Draft and review various legal instruments.
- Communicate with social work staff, area attorneys, and the Guardian ad Litem office concerning orders and scheduling.
- Schedule meetings and conferences, and make travel and accommodations for attorneys.
- Assist social workers in scheduling court hearings.
- Accept service of all subpoena issues on the Department, prepare Motion and Orders to Quash subpoenas, and deliver and track subpoenaed files to various judges’ courtrooms.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Minimum of 6 years of legal experience, OR
- A related Associate’s Degree and 4 years of experience, OR
- A related Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of experience, OR
- A related Master’s Degree and 0 years of work experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Liberal Arts, Journalism, or related field and two (2) years of related legal experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License or Certification Required:
- NC Notary is required after hire.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of relevant legal terminology, legal research, and investigation methodology.
- Considerable knowledge of the program area or legal specialty assigned.
- Knowledge of case, statutory, and common law, judicial and quasi-judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
- Ability to read and understand legal documents such as contracts, deeds, claims, and opinions.
- Ability to draft court orders requiring advanced level writing skills.
- Adequate computer skills, proficiency in typing/speed, and extensive knowledge of technology.
- Ability to independently prioritize workload and meet time mandates for tasks.
- Working knowledge of juvenile statutory law and judicial and quasi-judicial procedures.
- Ability to perform legal research following preliminary instructions regarding methods or approach, source material, and policy and precedent of the office.
- Ability to summarize facts and evidence and prepare legal instruments.
Salary Information:
- External Hiring Range: - per hour
- Pay Range: - per hour
- Salaries are non-negotiable for new and current employees, determined by years of relevant education and experience above minimum requirements.
Additional Information:
- The position is in-office only, with no option for remote work, located at 40 Coxe Avenue, Asheville.
- The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free parking provided.
