Job Overview:
A law firm based in Rochester, MN, is seeking a detail-focused Estate Planning Attorney to join its established legal practice. This role involves working directly with individuals, families, and business owners to create and manage comprehensive estate and succession strategies. The position requires a deep understanding of probate and trust administration, strong client-facing communication skills, and the ability to guide clients through emotionally sensitive legal decisions. The attorney will also engage in tax planning, document preparation, and administrative oversight in a dynamic, client-centric environment.

Duties:

  • Draft and finalize estate planning documents, including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, and related agreements

  • Conduct estate tax planning, including credit shelter trust funding, disclaimers, and tax minimization strategies

  • Prepare and submit federal and state gift and estate tax filings (Forms 706, 709, M706, M706Q)

  • Guide clients through probate and non-probate estate administration processes

  • Counsel farmers and business owners on legacy and succession planning

  • Represent clients in probate court and related legal proceedings

  • Collaborate with legal staff, including paralegals, clerks, and administrative team members, to ensure timely and accurate case handling

  • Maintain orderly client records and ensure timely updates to case files

  • Educate clients on retirement planning, charitable giving, life insurance structuring, and legacy options

  • Analyze client needs and recommend legal solutions that align with long-term goals

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in estate planning and estate administration

  • Prior experience handling probate, wills, trusts, and real estate elements of estate plans

  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota

  • Demonstrated experience in working with clients during emotionally complex situations

  • Familiarity with family-owned business planning and rural estate concerns is an asset

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in business, finance, or related fields

Certifications:

  • Active license to practice law in Minnesota

  • ABA membership preferred

Skills:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially in high-stakes or emotionally sensitive contexts

  • Advanced organizational abilities and attention to detail

  • Sound knowledge of state and federal estate tax regulations

  • Capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively

  • Proficient in legal research tools and estate planning software
