The Legal Services department at the University of Houston Law Center is currently seeking a Legal Intern for their summer internship program. This position is available for both rising 2Ls and 3Ls and offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of legal subject areas. The internship is available as a full or split summer position, providing flexibility for students to balance their academic and professional commitments.

The Legal Services department at the University of Houston Law Center is responsible for providing legal counsel and representation to the institution and its various departments, including General Business Transactions and Intellectual Property (GB/IP), Patient Care and Hospital Operations (PEO), and Litigation and Risk Management (Lit, Risk). The Legal Intern will have the opportunity to work in both the GB/IP and PEO/Lit, Risk departments, gaining exposure to a wide range of legal matters and learning from experienced attorneys.

The Legal Intern will primarily assist with legal research and drafting of various documents, including contracts, pleadings, and motions. They will also have the opportunity to interact with institutional clients and gain a deeper understanding of the legal issues facing a large academic institution. The specific responsibilities and learning objectives for each department are outlined below.

GB/IP - Externship Responsibilities:
• Help with contract drafting and interpretation, as needed
• Conduct legal research regarding business-related matters and intellectual property issues.
• Interact with institutional clients, including supply chain management, innovation, pharmacy, managed care, real estate, philanthropy, strategic industry ventures, facilities management, institutional compliance, office of technology commercialization, and research administration

PEO/Lit, Risk - Externship Responsibilities:
• Conduct state and federal research regarding various hospital regulations and patient care issues, including scope of practice for licensed providers, advance directives, informed consents, policy development, patient rights, emergency room laws, telehealth, etc.
• Help with drafting and responding to pleadings, motions, and discovery related to lawsuits brought against the institution
• Conduct legal research regarding employment and academic/educational matters

In addition to gaining valuable hands-on experience, the Legal Intern will also have the opportunity to develop important skills such as legal research, drafting, and client interaction. They will also have the chance to work on a variety of legal subject areas, including general business transactions, intellectual property, patient care and hospital operations, risk management, and litigation. This internship is a great opportunity for law students to gain practical experience and enhance their legal education.

Salary Information:
The salary for this internship position is competitive and will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition to the salary, the Legal Intern will also have the opportunity to receive course credit through the University of Houston Law Center.
