Job Title: Accountant (Paralegal)
Job Responsibilities:
The Accountant (Paralegal) at the law firm will be a crucial part of the Paralegal Team, specifically supporting the Financial Services and Capital Markets (FSCM) business unit. This role involves handling a comprehensive range of estate administration tasks by collaborating with the firm’s attorneys. Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing various tax returns, including Estate Tax Returns and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns.
- Maintaining financial records of trusts, performing trust accounting, and auditing accounts.
- Managing general ledger accounts, reconciling broker statements, and preparing payables and bank deposits.
- Obtaining and reconciling 1099 and K-1 statements.
- Administering the funding and management of irrevocable trusts post-death.
- Handling probate administration, including drafting probate pleadings.
- Acting as an accounting expert, providing guidance and best practices to team members.
- Maintaining close contact with clients and financial advisors.
- Meeting an annual billable hour requirement of 1600 hours.
- Developing technical proficiency in database use, internet/electronic research, and management of project folders/electronic files.
- Organizing and managing files independently or delegating tasks to business professionals as appropriate.
- Ensuring attention to detail and high-quality work.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
The position has specific educational and experience requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, with a preference for candidates holding a CPA.
- A two-year degree is required, whereas a Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program is preferred. Substantial related experience may substitute for formal education.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in Trusts & Estates is preferred.
- Candidates should possess excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proven success in a fast-paced, continually changing environment is crucial.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with tax and trust accounting software is necessary.
- Experience with document database programs or software is required.
- Significant client case management experience is expected.
- Candidates should have exceptional attention to detail and the ability to interact effectively and professionally, providing exceptional service internally and externally.
- High organizational skills, the ability to prioritize workflow, and effective project management capabilities are essential.
- The capacity to perform effectively with little or no supervision and within established time limits and ongoing deadlines is necessary.
