NJOPD, or **Members Only**, is offering a unique and hands-on internship opportunity for college and graduate students interested in the legal field. As an intern at NJOPD, you will have the chance to work closely with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing the best possible legal representation for our clients. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience and receive mentorship and training from experienced professionals.
Opportunities Available Year-Round and Statewide
Our internship program is available year-round and statewide, giving students the flexibility to choose the best time and location for their internship. We offer internships for college juniors and seniors, graduate students, and even paralegal students. We also have specialized units, such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy, for graduate students in fields such as social work.
Hands-On Experience in Various Tasks
As an intern at NJOPD, you will have the chance to work on a variety of tasks, providing you with a well-rounded experience in the legal field. Some of the tasks you may be involved in include:
- Assisting with investigations
- Communicating with clients
- Conducting research and writing
- Preparing for trials
- Attending court proceedings and training programs
In addition, graduate students in fields such as social work can apply to intern in specialized units, such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy, where they will have the opportunity to work closely with clients and gain valuable hands-on experience.
How to Apply
To apply for an internship at NJOPD, please submit a cover letter explaining your interest in our program, the areas of law you are interested in, your geographic preference or limitations, and your availability, including anticipated start and end dates, preferred number of hours, and schedule.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall semester, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring semester, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer semester.
In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process with our regional offices and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and undergo screening and approval before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our team of attorneys defends individuals charged with criminal offenses, represents parents in cases involving allegations of abuse and neglect, represents children who have been removed from their homes, advocates for individuals involuntarily committed to psychiatric facilities, and represents clients seeking post-conviction relief. We also have specialized units, such as the Special Hearings Unit for those facing Megan's Law tier classification, and the Conviction Integrity Unit for individuals seeking post-conviction relief. Our attorneys also handle cases in Recovery Court and the Intensive Supervision Program, as well as in our Forensic Science Unit.
