Job Title: Mediation Program Attorney
Department: Mediation & Conflict Resolution
Job Responsibilities:
- Manage a complex mediation docket from initial referral through settlement or other resolution. Tasks include verifying materials, drafting case-related communications and agreements, disseminating documents, and ensuring cases progress efficiently.
- Schedule and conduct conference calls, virtual and in-person mediation sessions, and liaise with outside entities or staff to reserve space for mediations.
- Maintain accurate and updated case files, including data entry and docketing of all mediation-related events.
- Build and manage relationships with Commission staff and personnel at other City agencies to support the work of the Office of Mediation and Conflict Resolution (OMCR).
- Expand OMCR’s public outreach by managing mediation data, drafting materials, and interacting with the public regarding OMCR’s activities.
- Attend and assist with pre-mediation calls and mediation sessions, providing legal analysis and research as needed.
- Conduct mediation sessions at the discretion of the Director of OMCR.
- Maintain knowledge of mediation and conflict resolution skills and techniques.
- Provide additional support to the Director of OMCR and perform other duties as needed to advance the work of the OMCR and the Commission.
Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- Four years of recent full-time, responsible, relevant, and satisfactory legal experience post-admission to any bar.
- Eighteen months of supervisory experience over other attorneys in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity, or experience performing highly complex and significant legal work.
- Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
Preferred Skills:
- At least four years of experience in the practice of law.
- Familiarity with the Commission’s work and New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL).
- Experience in mediation, litigation, and settlement, preferably involving employment, housing, public accommodations, or other civil rights subject areas.
- Strong organizational, detail-oriented, and independent or collaborative work abilities.
- Excellent legal research and case management skills, with the ability to manage a large number of cases with competing deadlines.
- Strong strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated success working collaboratively with colleagues, clients, attorneys, and supervisors.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including immigrants, people of color, individuals with limited English proficiency, people living with HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and those with accommodations issues related to pregnancy, disability, or religion.
- Excellent writing, analytical, and persuasive communication skills.
- Experience leading complex confidential cases and handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
Salary Information:
Salary range: $100, – $120,
