Job Title: AFJ Law Program Director
Job Responsibilities:
The AFJ Law Program Director is tasked with the comprehensive strategy, management, and direction of the AFJ Law program. This individual will establish AFJ Law as a trusted provider of compliance legal services for the progressive nonprofit sector. Key responsibilities include:
- Planning, developing, and directing AFJ Law to empower progressive nonprofits by providing legal services related to 501(c)(3) compliance and risk management strategies concerning federal and state advocacy laws.
- Representing clients in limited scope representations and preparing written opinions on legal issues.
- Collaborating with the Vice President of Strategy, VP of Operations/Chief of Staff, and finance and administration staff to design AFJ Law’s structure and operational systems.
- Identifying and prioritizing AFJ Law’s client base, focusing on geographic, issue area, and size/scope of nonprofits.
- Managing staffing and consulting needs, including hiring, supervision, discipline, and termination of staff and vendors.
- Ensuring alignment of advice and guidance provided by AFJ Law and the Bolder Advocacy program.
- Staying informed about laws applicable to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and advising nonprofits accordingly.
- Conducting timely research and providing advice on complex legal questions related to tax code, election, lobbying, campaign finance, and ethics.
- Collaborating with the Communications team to enhance the visibility of AFJ Law.
- Overseeing the development of program goals, legal services scope, and key performance indicators in coordination with organizational leadership.
- Partnering with the Development team to secure funding for AFJ Law and meeting grant deliverables.
- Developing and monitoring AFJ Law’s budget, ensuring efficient resource utilization and program growth.
- Establishing relationships with partners, nonprofit legal service organizations, and networks of tax and elections law attorneys.
- Working with the General Counsel to develop internal policies for legal compliance and best practices.
- Developing policies for managing conflicts of interest and client representation ethics.
- Creating standard operating procedures for client intake, service scope, retention, and termination.
- Maintaining legal expertise in state lobbying and campaign finance law for jurisdictions where the Program Director holds an active law license.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor (.) degree and an active law license in one or more . jurisdictions.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in legal policy or advocacy work, with at least 8 years specializing in nonprofit advocacy, lobbying, and/or campaign finance law.
- Experience providing legal services and representation to nonprofit clients, drafting legal documents, managing client relationships, and utilizing organizational systems.
- At least 5 years of management experience with a commitment to team inspiration and staff development.
- Mastery of federal nonprofit advocacy laws and knowledge of state laws in jurisdictions with an active law license.
- Experience in program development and implementing strategic program plans.
- Familiarity with the progressive nonprofit landscape and regulatory climate.
- Experience in contract review, negotiation, drafting, and management.
- Ability to provide succinct and practical legal counsel tailored to nonprofit goals and values.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to explain complex legal concepts to colleagues and partners.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of engaging diverse and high-level audiences.
- Demonstrated innovation and experience in driving ideas from conception to implementation.
- Experience in developing and managing organizational department budgets.
- Commitment to social justice causes.
Salary Information:
The starting salary range for the AFJ Law Program Director position is $145,000 - $150,000. The organization offers a comprehensive and generous benefits program including:

Work Environment:
This is a full-time remote position within the contiguous United States, with optional workspace in Washington, DC. Periodic travel to DC or other locations may be required. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 . to 5:00 ., with occasional evening and weekend hours. This role has supervisory responsibilities.
